Natural In One Year

Making your beauty regime 100% natural isn't always as easy as you think. Follow this plan to become a 100% natural beauty within a year.

People invest lots of money in beauty products. From toothpaste to eczema cream, eyeliner to deodorant – the average women will have a fairly sizeable stock pile of beauty products and unfortunately unless previously aware of chemical ingredients, there’s a high chance very few, if any, of those products will be 100% natural. Trying to change everything at once is costly, hard work and hard to maintain. Small gradual steps will ensure you keep going in the right direction at a sustainable pace. We have put together a plan for obtaining 100% natural beauty in one year. By this time next year, your beauty regime will be natural and you will feel amazing for it.

January - Moisturisers

Products which sit on your skin are the ones which pose the highest risk to your health, they are given plenty of time to penetrate deep down through your skin’s delicate layers - chemicals and all! Step one to giving up the chemicals is to switch to natural moisturisers. This means all moisturisers, including face serums, body balms, foot gels, hand creams and eye creams.

February - Teethcare

This month you will need to switch your toothpaste, mouthwash and any other product you use to clean your teeth. There are plenty of natural alternatives available and they can still give you the minty-fresh, clean feeling you get from mainstream products. Chemical teeth cleaners can contain all of the following and more: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, artificial sweeteners, fluoride, alcohol, synthetic colourings and preservatives. By using 100% natural products in your mouth you are ensuring these harmful ingredients don’t enter your digestive system!

March - Lip Products

Apparently a person who regularly wears lip balms or sticks consumes, on average, 4-9lb of the product each year. If you think how many times you lick your lips or have a drink after applying a lip product, it’s not hard to see how so much gets consumed. Luckily though, swopping to natural lip care is very easy. Natural lip balms can still be smooth, thick and glossy, lipsticks can still hold their colour for ages and the range of colours available is just a vast as in the chemical alternatives. You will need to ensure during this month you give up all lip products including balms, liners, sticks, stains, glosses, shimmers, salves and colours.

April - Bath Products

Sitting in a bath filled with chemicals for half an hour is a sure fire way to ensure they enter your blood stream! This month, alongside any bath oils, creams, floats, bombs etc. you need to give up any body exfoliators and shaving gels. There are plenty of natural alternatives available to make your bath time a dream.

May - Suncare

Many people are now turning to natural sun creams after the chemicals in the unnatural mainstream alternatives are being broken down by the sun, causing skin rashes. By switching to natural sun creams you don’t have to worry about a decrease in effectiveness, natural sun creams come in a wide spectrum of factors and offer safe protection for all the family. Switch to natural sun care this month to ensure a healthy summer.

June - Body Cleansers

This month you will need to switch to all natural body cleansers, this includes ditching any chemical soap, shower gel, body wash and baby wipes. Chemicals in many shower gels and soaps have been linked to all kinds of skin problems including eczema and dermatitis. This switch is one of the easiest to make as natural alternatives are readily available, you will even find natural soaps in many supermarkets!

July - Make Up

Out of date, chemical ridden products can play havoc with your skin - this month you're taking on the make up challenge! You need to swop all your make up (no shortcuts) for natural alternatives, this includes: concealer, foundation, eye liner, bronzer, blusher, eye shadow, nail varnish, mascara and highlighter. Whilst your cleansing your make up of chemicals it is also a good idea to wash all your brushes and sponges in hot, soapy water and throw away any out of date products. Every product will have a PAO number (period after opening).

This states how many months after opening the product you have to use it before you should throw it away. If you continue using it after this date, harmful bacteria can start breeding and can cause skin irritation & infection.

August - Deodorant

The dangers of deodorants have been widely publicised recently, with cancer, Alzheimer’s and contact dermatitis all getting linked to chemicals present in deodorants. Natural alternatives let your armpits breath whilst stopping excess sweating and body odour. There are lots of natural options out there from solid crystals to creams and sprays. This month you need to start exploring the natural options and ditch all chemical ones you currently own.

September - Fragrance

This month you need to swap all fragrances for natural alternatives including perfumes and body sprays. This might be a hard month, especially for those who have a favourite scent they always buy, however it is an important step to making your beauty regime safe. Due to loopholes in labeling law, companies are not required to tell us what's in fragrance. A toxic mixture of undisclosed chemcials can be used and have been linked to allergies, asthma, neurological problems and hormone disruption. Many fragrances also contain phthalates, which are linked to sperm damage and birth defects. Good news is there are many great natural fragrances available. You can even make your own fragrances using essential oils.

October - Face Cleansing

Time to ditch the chemical face cleansers this month. This includes toners, cleansers, face masks, face wipes and make up remover. Natural ingredients are amazing on our skin and there are thousands of natural ingredients available. This means natural skin cleansers can be tailored to your skin type just as effectively as chemical cleansers can be, only without the health risks!

November - Hair Care

This is the month of natural haircare! This includes giving up any shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mousse or other styling product that isn't 100% natural. Unnatural styling products probably contain some of the worst ingredients there are in cosmetics. They block pores, dehydrate the hair shaft and strip out the hair’s nutrients. Natural alternatives do a great job at cleaning, conditioning and holding your style all day you just need to take the plunge and give them a go.

December - And the rest...

Right you're almost there. You've given up 90% of your chemical nasties already, this month is just a chance to do a sweep of all those nasties you've missed. Things to consider are sleep balms, antiseptic creams, on the spot treatment, tanning lotions, aftershave lotion, nail varnish remover... Check your drawers and see what you can find!

If you’re unsure about what ingredients make products dangerous, see our chemicals to avoid article. Print it out and use it to check the health risk your products pose. This will give you a good idea of what needs to be thrown and what can be saved.
